Johor palace yet to grant audience to Jakim
Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar has yet to grant the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) and Islamic Affairs Minister Jamil Khir Baharom an audience.
"We will wait for (the palace's) permission," Jamil Khir told reporters in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
When pressed further, Jamil Khir refused to elaborate and ducked into a nearby lift.
On Oct 14, Jakim director-general Othman Mustapha said his department and Jamil Khir will seek an audience with the Johor ruler over the conduct of preacher Zamihan Mat Zin.
Zamihan, who is a Jakim staff, had criticised the Johor ruler's decree against Muslim-exclusive launderettes in his state.
Following this, Zamihan was arrested to facilitate investigations into his alleged sedition. He has yet to be charged in court.
Sultan Ibrahim had described Zamihan as an "empty tin with no brains" and instructed the Johor Department of Islamic Affairs to cut ties with Jakim.
The Selangor palace also took issue with Zamihan, since the inflammatory lecture was conducted in Shah Alam, and banned him from preaching in the state.
However, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has described Zamihan as an asset to the country because of his expertise in deradicalising suspected terrorists.- Mkini
