Zaid says PAC report on 1MDB ‘changes nothing’
PETALING JAYA: The report on 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) released yesterday by Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) “changes nothing” as its members were “well selected” and were careful not to ask difficult questions about the controversy, says former law minister Zaid Ibrahim.
In a blog posting, Zaid singled out Opposition MP Tony Pua from the DAP as the only “brave” member of the committee and remarked how all the others were silent on the issue. “They were all well selected, which is probably why they have never asked difficult questions.”
“How can anyone expect the truth to be known if the man who is the sole shareholder, sole signatory, Finance Minister and Prime Minister all at the same time doesn’t say anything about what happened in 1MDB?” Zaid asked, pointing out that Bank Negara Malaysia officials never attended the PAC’s hearings nor did the prime minister himself.
“Make no mistake: Malaysia is one of the most corrupt countries on Earth,” he said, adding that this was so because it was a nation led by a dictator who was also corrupt.
He also slammed the declaration that the A-G’s report on 1MDB was an official secret thereby ruling out any chance of the issue being debated in Parliament.
“This, from the Parliament that is supposedly being reformed. Go ahead and announce that more reforms will be implemented, as if the people believe this charade.”
He also made a snide remark at the offer by 1MDB’s directors to resign and said, “That’s very impressive. That means you can tell the people that all of them were responsible for the debacle and the losses, and that they must be punished.”
He said the move was obviously orchestrated so blame could be placed on the directors instead of on anyone else and added, “But it changes nothing.
“The truth about 1MDB will never be known until a new, non-Umno Government comes to power, perhaps many years from now. We are a long way from reaching closure on this matter, I can assure you.”
