Drug suspect nabbed a week after stealing car with mother, child inside
KOTA KINABALU: Police here have successfully nabbed a suspected carjacker who took off with a vehicle while the mother and her toddler were still inside.
The 30-year-old unemployed local was arrested by police at about 4.30am on Friday at Kampung Air, here.
Earlier, the woman had lodged a police report on April 23, stating that her Nissan C90 vehicle had been stolen by an unknown man while parked beside the Kota Kinabalu central market (facing the KK Plaza building).
In the 12.40pm incident, the woman was waiting inside the car with her one year eight months old daughter while her husband went to the market to buy fish.
“The car engine was still on when the suspect suddenly got into the car and drove off with the woman and her daughter still inside,” said city police chief, ACP M Chandra.
The woman, he added, did not know where the suspect came from as she was pre-occupied with handling her toddler daughter who was crying at that time.
The suspect reportedly drove towards the roundabout near Hyatt Regency Kinabalu hotel, before dropping off the woman and her child and speeding off with the car.
The woman then went to get her husband before they both went to the police station to lodge a report.
Chandra said a test on the suspect’s urine was positive for amphetamine, and that he was also previously jailed for three months for an offence under Section 15 of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
