KUCHING: The PKR has denied ever having sent messages to inform the public that Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem has paid the ransom money to the kidnappers of four hostages from Sibu.
State PKR vice-chairman See Chee How, who is the party’s candidate for Batu Lintang, clarified the matter during a press conference yesterday.
He said PKR media relations coordinator Liza Bong lodged a police report on Saturday, stating that her mobile number might have been hacked or manipulated in some way to send the messages.
Bong, who just came back here from the UK to help See with the campaign for the next state election, said she was using a DiGi prepaid mobile number during her time here.
“Today (April 30, 2016) from 3.35pm, I have been receiving messages from unknown persons,” she said in the police report.
“All these messages have a common theme — relating to alleged payment by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Adenan) Satem to secure the release of the (four) hostages from their Filipino abductors.”
Bong said she ignored the messages at first because she was all tied up with her duties, but she began to feel worried after receiving two phone calls from unknown persons later, asking similar questions on how much Adenan had paid to secure the hostages.
“I did not suspect anything at first and replied ‘you got the wrong number’. However my suspicion arose after receiving another phone call enquiring about the same thing.
“I asked the caller why she called me about it and was told that she had received a SMS from my number stating that Adenan had paid money to the Filipino kidnappers to secure the release of the hostages.”
Bong had immediately lodged a report to inform police that it was not her doing, and also to allow the authorities to undertake investigations.
On the whole situation, See said: “We want to make it clear that this is not the party’s doing. We would not want the public to be misled, or to allow anyone the opportunity to take advantage of the situation.”
