Beware of negative effects of social media, warns Sharifah Hasidah
KUCHING: Semariang assemblywoman Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali reminds parents to be aware of the negative impacts on their children if the internet or social media are abused by irresponsible people.
She noted that drugs have been sold through social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and others.
“I have seen cases where drug pushers would use Facebook as a tool to distribute drugs. It also seems to be the new way to help distribute drugs nowadays too,” she added.
Thus she wanted parents to monitor their children closely especially when they were using the social media to prevent them from getting involved in unhealthy activities such as drugs abuse.
One of the steps which parents could take was to find out who were the friends of their children and whom they were mingling with.
“It is the responsibility of all parents to find out what their children are doing in their everyday lives. It is also vital for parents to know the symptoms of drug abuse and its side effects,” she said.
Apart from that it was also important that parents forge good relationship with local community leaders, teachers, school officials and the school’s Parents-Teachers’ Association (PTA) to discuss matters which are related to drug abuse.
Sharifah Hasidah who is also political secretary to the chief minister was speaking during a programme themed, My Kampung, organised by the National Anti Drugs Agency (AADK) at the Kampung Semerah Padi recreational hall yesterday.
The programme’s main objective was to spread information regarding drug abuse among youngsters and to inform the public about the services offered by AADK.
Also present at the event was state AADK director Wan Madihi Wan Salleh.
