Johor police chief defends use of force by cops in video
PETALING JAYA: Police officers seen assaulting a drug suspect in Johor in a video now gone viral, were acting within the scope of their duty, says Johor police chief Wan Ahmad Najmuddin.
In defending his men, Wan Ahmad said the suspect was a threat to the safety of civilians and refused to cooperate with the police.
He said the incident which occurred on Friday, began when two motorcycle patrol personnel in Jalan Masai spotted the suspect on a motorcycle.
They indicated for him to stop but the suspect sped off instead resulting in the police officers giving chase.
The suspect later lost control of his machine and crashed, after which he was nabbed with the help of two other patrol unit officers who came on the scene.
“Our officers had no choice but to use force as the suspect was not cooperative and tried to retaliate,” Wan Ahmad said, adding that the suspect sustained minor injuries from the crash.
He also explained that his officers found a packet containing marijuana on the suspect, who also tested positive for amphetamine.
He called on the public to refrain from spreading the video in order to prevent creating a misunderstanding on the incident.
In the 50-second video uploaded on Facebook, the suspect is seen lying on the side of the road in Pasir Gudang, with one policeman holding him down while another kicks his head. Two other policemen are seen standing near by watching the assault take place.
