Kaamatan Festival to be held in KL

KOTA KINABALU: This year’s national-level Kaamatan (Harvest) Festival will be held in Kuala Lumpur.

Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Hj Kamarlin bin Hj Ombi said the government is now having meetings to ascertain what is needed and to iron out the finer details of the program.

He revealed that the national event is expected to be held in early June, before the start of fasting month.

“The month-long harvest festival is held annually and well attended by our people, but we want to bring it outside of Sabah. In Kuala Lumpur, our target is not only the people of Peninsula, but also people from outside the country,” said Kamarlin after officiating at the closing and certificate presentation ceremony of the Chalet and Rest House course for retired army veterans here yesterday.

He emphasized that the government also believes that Kuala Lumpur could be an ideal platform to market Sabah at an international level due to the cosmopolitan aspect of the capital city.

On the kidnapping issue, Kamarlin said the recent case had focused on Malaysians traveling regularly by water to trade with the Philippines.

“This is the reason why, in terms of business activities, the state government had immediately frozen barter trade activities between Philippines and Sabah,” he explained.
