UEC graduates in state civil service urged to sit for SPM BM paper
KUCHING: Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) graduates who have been recruited into the state civil service are encouraged to sit for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) Bahasa Malaysia paper during their three-year probation period.
Housing Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said these graduates should not have any problem working as civil servants as long as they passed the Bahasa Malaysia subject.
“UEC is very much similar to the national examination SPM, with the exception that the latter required candidates to pass Bahasa Malaysia. The rest of the subjects are relevant to our national education system.
“Since we are now recruiting UEC graduates, the only problem is the Bahasa Malaysia subject.
“What I would suggest is that during the probation period, which is three years in the civil service, the UEC holders can take Bahasa Malaysia as a single subject for exam at SPM level,” he told reporters after officiating at the earth-breaking ceremony for Chung Hua Middle School No.4 Multi-Purpose Hall here yesterday.
Abang Johari was optimistic that if UEC graduates were successful in other subjects, they should not have problems passing the Bahasa Malaysia paper.
“Chinese are very smart people, so I think passing Bahasa Malaysia will be ‘kacang putih’ (easy) for them. Once they have passed this subject, the whole requirements to join the civil service will be fulfilled.”
He also pointed out a reason the state government changed its policy to recognise UEC was due to the lack of local human resources.
“In fact, we want all our human resources to be made available here. But unfortunately, there are many Sarawakians working overseas and many of them are from Chinese schools. I have come across many Sarawakians who are UEC holders working in countries such as Singapore in various sectors, such as medical and commerce.
“These are the people who gained knowledge and experience during their time overseas. That is why the state government has decided to recognise UEC in order to retain intelligent people in Sarawak.”
Earlier, Abang Johari, who is also Satok assemblyman, pledged RM500,000 for the school’s multi-purpose hall.
“I will always give priority when it comes to education because every parent wants their children to have good education, which is a good asset we can give them.”
He commended the school for its achievement in obtaining the five-star recognition by the Ministry of Education for ‘Pemeriksaan Standard Kualiti Institusi Pendidikan Swasta (SKIPS) Sekolah Tahun 2015’.
“It is not easy to achieve this award. By obtaining this recognition, this means the government has recognised the school’s performance and its contributions to our education.”
Meanwhile, Chung Hua Middle Schools No.1, 3 and 4 Board of Management Committee vice chairman Tan Jit Kee said a multi-purpose hall for the school was urgently needed in view of its increasing student population.
“We are delighted the number of students for Chung Hua Middle School No. 4 has increased from 109 in 2004 to 300 this year. Therefore, a multi-purpose hall is needed not only for the weekly assembly but also for other co-curriculum activities.”
He expressed his gratitude to Abang Johari for constantly giving grants to Chinese medium independent schools for the past 20 years.
Among those present were Senator Prof Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, Kuching Chinese community leader Temenggong Lu Kim Yong, Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) Datuk Bandar Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai and Chung Hua Middle School No.4 principal Kon Shing Yong.
