Objections against Zakir nothing to do with King, Islam
PETALING JAYA: Objections against preacher Dr Zakir Naik from speaking in Malaysia have nothing to do with challenging the Yang di-Pertuan Agong or the position of Islam in the country.
MIC Wanita Chief Mohana Muniandy said this in taking Perkasa to task over the warning they issued to MIC Youth for calling on the authorities to stop Zakir from speaking at a series of talks in the country.
She told FMT that it was extreme for Perkasa to cite the King and Constitution in its warning.
“Don’t use Islam and the King to threaten people,” she said, adding that the warning was uncalled for.
Mohana explained that Malaysia adhered to the middle path and Zakir was known to be an extremist preacher who put down other religions.
She said at a time when unity was needed, Perkasa should be opposing all forms of extremism.
“We don’t need people like Zakir. MIC opposes all extremist preachers, regardless of what religion they are preaching.”
She said MIC would continue to call for Zakir to be barred from speaking in Malaysia because putting down other religions was not conducive to society’s well-being.
Earlier today, Perkasa Youth Chief Irwan Fahmi Ideris warned MIC against angering Muslims by objecting to Zakir’s talks after MIC Youth Chief C Sivarraajh made his objections known.
Irwan reminded MIC of the position of Islam and claimed that the objections to Zakir was tantamount to disrespecting the King as the head of Islam.
