SIBU: Pushed on by great determination and sporting spirit, some 150 cyclists, comprising mostly UPP Pelawan Youth Wing members, braved the heavy rain and cold wind to complete the 20km route yesterday.

The event was organised by UPP Pelawan Youth Wing in collaboration with Swan Cycling Club, and aimed at promoting healthy lifestyle among the younger generation.

According to UPP Pelawan branch chief Kapitan Datuk Janet Lau, owing to the overwhelming response, they had to limit the number of participants for safety reasons. “I am touched by the high determination and commitment of our youth members, who continued to cycle despite the heavy rain. They are not afraid of facing obstacles or difficulties; they still proceeded even though it was raining,” Lau told reporters here.

Adding on, she said UPP Pelawan has a very strong youth team. She pointed out that cycling was a way for UPP to connect with the younger generation.

“The overwhelming response clearly shows that the younger generation love outdoor activities.” She further disclosed that the cycling event was the second of the outdoor activities they organised after the Hash Run last month.

Other activities planned for this month include blood donation drive and a health seminar, she added. All these activities, she explained, was to promote a healthy lifestyle. She thanked the traffic police for providing assistance.

Meanwhile, organising chairman Alan Ngu said the 20km route stretched from UPP Pelawan office to Kemuyang traffic lights and back to the branch office. Ngu also briefed the participants on safety. Later, Lau flagged off the event in the midst of the rain.
