Nazri: It is M’sians, not foreigners who decide if Najib goes

nazri-aziz_mahathir_600_1PUTRAJAYA: Umno Minister Nazri Aziz has made light of Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s quest for foreign intervention to support his move in removing Najib Razak as prime minister of the country.

In an interview with The Australian Weekend, the former premier said the chances of ousting Najib, who is under fire for the mismanagement of state investment fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), were slim without external pressure.

However Nazri had a different take on the suggestion, and asked, “What can the foreigners do to us? When he (Mahathir) was the prime minister, there were unrelenting attacks on his administration and I know this as I was also a Cabinet member then.”

“Even with external pressure he (Mahathir) still lasted for 22 years,” said the Tourism and Culture Minister in a press conference held at his ministry today.

During Mahathir’s time, Malaysia came under heavy criticism from various governments, including the US, particularly after Anwar Ibrahim was sacked as his deputy in 1998.

Nazri said history should be a lesson to all, and Mahathir’s ability to remain in power as long as he did despite calls for him to step down only proved that it was up to Malaysians to decide on who their leader should be.

Nazri, who is MP for Padang Rengas, also reiterated that Mahathir’s actions contradicted with what he himself had done in the past.

Mahathir has come under fire from politicians in the ruling coalition over his call for foreign powers to help push Najib out as prime minister.

Reacting to this, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi pointed out that when Mahathir was prime minister, he frequently reminded party leaders against cooperating with foreign powers as doing so would tarnished the country’s image.

Members of the Umno Veterans Club meanwhile want the Sedition Act to be used against Mahathir, Malaysia’s longest serving PM.
