You Know New Scandals Are Coming When A French President Comes For A Visit

The last time a French president came for a visit, it was about selling military hardware and software to Malaysia. The visit by then President Jacques Chirac in July 2003, however, didn’t only secure France a mouth-watering deal of two French-made Scorpene submarines, it also brought along explosive multi-scandals – corruption and murder.

When Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak (then Defence Minister) signed the deal for the purchase of two Scorpene-class submarines and a sub Marino Agosta by Malaysia, taxpayers didn’t know it would cost them an arm and a leg – nearly RM5 billion for the hardware plus more than RM2 billion for the training of operatives and maintenance of the submarines.

What was supposed to be the proudest moment in the history of Malaysia soon turned out to be a nightmare when the country’s navy boys discovered that their first submarine “cannot dive”. Problems ranging from the submarine’s cooling system to undisclosed defects were blamed for the sub’s refusal to submerge, triggering criticism and jokes.

But the real jaw-dropping scandal wasn’t about RM534.8 million in kickbacks (which Najib son of Razak said was “commission”, not “corruption”) which came together with the package, but the gruesome murder of Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu, whose allegedly pregnant body was blown to pieces beyond recognition with military-grade C4 explosives.

Malaysians would discover, to their horror, that their leader – Najib Razak – had anal intercourse” with Altantuya as alleged by witness Balasubramaniam in his Statutory Declaration. As revealed by an Al-Jazeera documentary – “Murder in Malaysia” – Altantuya was also the ex-lover of Razak Baginda, a close adviser of Mr. Najib.

After the explosive revelation that Mr. Razak was the third suspect who pulled the trigger and shot the Mongolian before two elite police members (Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri and Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar) were tasked to destroy the corpse, Al-Jazeera journalist Mary Ann Jolley was deported by 5 Malaysian immigration officers and a man in military outfit.

Although the documentary didn’t show Najib Razak was directly involved in the murder, Al-Jazeera revealed how the Malaysian Prime Minister informed his buddy Razak Baginda that he had sexual relationship with Altantuya (also known as Aminah). And it was Mr. Najib who had introduced Altantuya to Mr. Razak at a diamond exhibition in Singapore.

Perhaps Najib administration didn’t want Mary Ann Jolley to find proof that after Najib got tired of Altantuya, he passed her to Baginda like a sex toy. The deportation of the Australian-based journalist, however, suggests that there could be darker secrets than Najib’s extraordinary sexual appetite, which could be political damaging in a Muslim-majority country.

With the visit by Francois Hollande, the second French president to ever visit Malaysia, people cannot help but speculating the type of scandals that are about to hit the nation. Dogged by RM50 billion 1MDB scandal, Mr. Najib tries his very best as a magician to hide the real reason the French president pays his last visit after his humiliating withdrawal from seeking his second term.

From supporting palm oil to conferring Legion d’Honneur (Legion of Honour) medal to martial arts movie star Michelle Yeoh to bailing out ailing national automaker Proton. But those stunts aren’t going to hide the fact that Francois Hollande came to sell its defence gadgets to Najib Razak. Malaysia became the first non-NATO country to acquire Airbus A400M transport aircraft.

But there’s a bigger fish to fry than four units of Airbus A400M purchased by Najib administration at an initial cost of RM1 billion, only to be revised later to RM600 million a pop (for a total RM2.4 billion). In May 2016, Airbus confirmed cracks have been found in all engines whose propellers rotate clockwise, after they found gearbox problem a month earlier.

Do you know that the Airbus A400M military transport planes are so problematic that the German military is forced to use 13 of the planes initially meant to be sold simply because they have been unable to find willing buyers? It appears that besides submarines which refused to sink, Najib had purchased overpriced planes that could drop from the sky (*grin*).

Francois Hollande with Najib Razak - Sale and Commission

Who cares about losing lives when Hollande’s greater agenda is to sell Dassault Aviation SA’s Rafale fighter aircraft to Najib? Sure, Najib said his government isn’t ready to make a purchase but the final negotiation bottleneck is all about greasing the hands. France is reportedly willing to sell 18 of the multi-role combat jets cheaply for US$2 billion (RM8.84 billion).

That’s a fire sale considering India signed a deal to purchase 36 of the same fighter jets from France last September for close to 7.8 billion Euros (US$8.4 billion; RM37.3 billion), although the specifications could be different. Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein, Najib’s cousin, was reportedly said that the race for new fighter jets has narrowed down to the Rafale and the Eurofighter Typhoon.

Hishammuddin’s plan for the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) is to replace the country’s squadron of Russian MIG-29 combat planes. Needless to say, people are already expecting commission (or rather corruption) to play its part in the purchase. What is stopping Najib Razak from signing is the timing of such mega military purchase at this critical hour.

A mega deal at this scale which would potentially generate hundreds of millions (if not billions) of dollars in kickbacks is better left after the 14th national snap election, which is speculated to be called this year. However, what the people don’t know is whether a fighter jets “value deal” will come with a “free gift” – another gruesome murder scandal.
