It’s officially intern season. It’s that time of year where countless college students and young people around the country scramble to secure internships for the summer and beyond
However, even the best internships end, eventually. That’s why it’s great to find a role that at least has the possibility of turning into a full-time gig.
LinkedIn recently analyzed user data and job postings to figure out which fields tend to see internships turn into job offers, measured by retention rates at individual companies. LinkedIn members who hold current full-time positions in organizations where they previously interned were counted as “retained hires.” Those retained hires were then broken down based on industry.
Here are the ten industries where an internship is most likely to lead to something more permanent, along with a selection of companies that are currently hiring:
Accounting
Percentage of internships that became jobs: 55%
Companies currently looking for interns: GM Financial, West Corporation, North Six, and CareerUp Inc.
Semiconductors
Percentage of internships that became jobs: 43%
Companies currently looking for interns: Peregrine Semiconductor, Micron Technology, Microchip Technology Inc., and Intel Corporation
Management consulting
Percentage of internships that became jobs: 38%
Companies currently looking for interns: Coker Group, Booz Allen Hamilton, Xerox, and Bealstone Inc.
Computer software
Percentage of internships that became jobs: 36%
Companies currently looking for interns: Vonage, IBM, TripAdvisor, and Sabre Corporation
Civil engineering
Percentage of internships that became jobs: 34%
Companies currently looking for interns: RailWorks Corporation, Golder Associates, Patrick Engineering, and Tetra Tech
Information technology and services
Percentage of internships that became jobs: 33%
Companies currently looking for interns: Timmons Group, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Sprint, and Canon Information and Imaging Solutions
Internet
Percentage of internships that became jobs: 33%
Companies currently looking for interns: Rent the Runway, the Walt Disney Company, Buzzfeed, and Facebook
Aviation and aerospace
Percentage of internships that became jobs: 32%
Companies currently looking for interns: SpaceX, Pratt & Whitney, Compass Airlines, and JetSuite
Defense & space
Percentage of internships that became jobs: 32%
Companies currently looking for interns: NASA, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Saab, and the Sierra Nevada Corporation
Retail
Percentage of internships that became jobs: 32%
Companies currently looking for interns: Christie’s, Tiffany & Co., Abercrombie & Fitch, and Marc Jacobs
